A starring turn in the recent Sri Lanka Under-19 teams tour of England has earned top-order batsman Avishka Fernando a call-up to Sri Lankas squad for the first two ODIs against Australia. Left-arm spinner Amila Aponso has also been named in a national squad for the first time, following good outings in South Africa with the Sri Lanka emerging team.Allrounders Milinda Siriwardana and Thisara Perera returned to the ODI squad, having been dropped for the series against England. Batsman Upul Tharanga and allrounder Dasun Shanaka was omitted, as were Farveez Maharoof, Suraj Randiv and Chaminda Bandara. Tharangas omission is despite his having had moderate success in the lower middle order, in England. Tillakaratne Dilshan returned to the side after having missed the England tour due to personal reasons.Fernando, 18, has not yet played any senior cricket, but recently hit consecutive hundreds - at Chelmsford and Canterbury - to help lead Sri Lanka Under-19 to an unprecedented whitewash over England Under-19. A bruising right-hand batsman, who had played for St. Sebastians College in Moratuwa, Fernando hit 285 runs in that three-match Youth ODI series, at an average of 95 and a strike rate of 103. He had also struck 97 in a Youth ODI against South Africa Under-19, in July.Aponso, meanwhile, had taken 13 wickets for 207 runs against South Africa Emerging XI, in a four-day game in Potchefstroom last week, and returned good figures in the one-day matches on the same tour. He was particularly impressive in first-class cricket for Ragama Cricket Club. He claimed 47 wickets at an average of 20.97 in the most recent Premier League Tournament, to finish third on the wicket-takers list. The man who topped that list - left-arm wristspinner Lakshan Sandakan - was also selected. He had once been in an ODI squad during a home series against England, in 2014, but did not play a game.Siriwardana, who had made a good start to his career with bat and ball, missed out on Test selection, but has now returned to the ODI team. Thisara had only been picked for Sri Lanka As recent tour to England but, despite proving expensive with the ball and only sporadically effective with the bat in that series, he was picked for Sri Lanka again. Allrounder Dhananjaya de Silva was also selected, following promising returns in his debut Test series. De Silva has played one ODI - against Ireland, in June.Nuwan Pradeep had recovered from the hamstring injury he sustained in the Test series, but Suranga Lakmal was the only other specialist seam bowler in this squad. Dushmantha Chameera and Lasith Malinga continued to be unavailable through injury. The first of five ODIs will be played on Sunday, at Khettarama. BATON ROUGE, La. -- Derrius Guice broke loose for touchdowns of 61 and 20 yards early in the third quarter, and LSU use a slew of big plays in the second half to break open what had been an unexpectedly close game and defeat Southern Mississippi 45-10 on Saturday night.LSU had two, long one-play touchdown drives -- an 80 yard catch-and-run by D.J. Chark and a 63-yard reception by Malachi Dupre on Danny Etlings long heave.LSU safety Jamal Adams helped the Tiger pull away when he forced Golden Eagles running back George Paynes fumble and then recovered it at the USM 26-yard line, setting up Guices second score. In the span of the third quarter, LSU (4-2) turned a 10-all tie into a 38-10 lead.Guice finished with 162 yards on 16 carries in his third start this season in place of Leonard Fournette, who is recovering from a left ankle injury and has not played since LSUs loss at Auburn on Sept. 24.The 5-foot-11, 212-pound Guice has rushed for at least 155 yards in each of his starts.Dupre added another touchdown on a 23-yard reception in the fourth quarter. Chark also scored a 19-yard rushing touchdown on an end-around in the first half.Etling finished with his best numbers since taking over as starter in the third game of the season, completing 11 of 18 passes for 276 yards and three TDs.Guice gave LSU the lead for good when he sprinted through a gaping hole blown open by guard Maea Teuhema, center Andy Dodd and tackle K.J. on the left side of LSUs offensive line and then galloped into the open field for a career-long scoring run . While Guices first touchdown demonstrated his break-away speed, his second showcased his elusiveness as he darted forward and then cut suddenly outsidee to elude would-be tacklers.ddddddddddddIto Smith scored the lone TD for Southern Miss (4-3) on a 1-yard run that gave Southern Miss its only lead of the game at 7-0. Golden Eagles QB Nick Mullens completed 25 of 36 passes for 161 yards.MISLEADING STATSSouthern Miss dominated time of possession, 37:59 to 22:01 and the Golden Eagles ran 73 total plays to LSUs 42, but that hardly mattered with LSU getting big plays on both sides of the ball in the second half.POLL IMPLICATIONSLSU, which was among the leading vote getters among unranked teams in the AP Top 25 Poll this past week, could very well be ranked again in the next poll after a second resounding victory under interim coach Ed Orgeron, who took over after Les Miles was fired four games into the season.TAKEAWAYSSouthern Mississippi: The Golden Eagles have play makers and the ability to be competitive in spurts with Power-5 conference teams, but need help for a beleaguered defense that has now allowed 100 points in its last two games.LSU: The Tigers have the kind of elite talent to turn it on suddenly and crush a heavy underdog from a mid-major conference. And the Tigers just might be trending in the right direction to become a formidable foe for Southeastern Conference opponents as well, particularly at home.UP NEXTSouthern Mississippi: The Golden Eagles are off next week, then resume action at home against Marshall on Oct. 29.LSU: The Tigers host No. 12 Mississippi in a pivotal mid-season clash in the SEC West race. It is also the first of five straight SEC games to close the season for LSU. ' ' '
